JOSH BLAKE DROPS ZESTY NEW SINGLE “HERE COMES THE FOOL,”
ANNOUNCES ACOUSTIC ALBUM FEATURING ALL STAR CAST

MARCUS KING, BILLY CARDINE AMONG SPECIAL GUESTS

Monday, April 15, 2019 (Asheville, NC) - Many producers are also musicians, but few are as multidimensional as Asheville, North Carolina’s own Josh Blake. Longtime engineer and affiliate of the acclaimed Echo Mountain Recording Studio; mastermind behind the popular independent media group IamAVL; standing member of assorted outfits - the iconic Granola Funk Express, Asheville Music Hall’s Tuesday Night Funk Jam house band, and leader of his own Josh Blake Organ Trio (JBOT), there isn’t much that Blake hasn’t at least dipped his toes in.

In his latest venture, Blake strips down to the core of his musicianship to reveal a never-before-heard batch of tracks, collected from years of songwriting and collaboration. With an extensive discography of releases under a myriad of project names, the multi-instrumentalist has found strength in simplicity. A veteran of the jam, funk, and rock worlds, Blake knew that this particular compilation would be best served in its near-original form.

With today’s release of the debut single “Here Comes the Fool,” Blake lets his inner troubadour loose, alluding to the folk format the project has taken on.

Says the songwriter on his decision to go acoustic:

Although I’m mostly found performing as a funk guitarist, I’ve been writing singer-songwriter style songs since I was a kid. Stepping out of my comfort zone slightly, this album represents an aspect of my musicality that usually doesn’t leave my living room. There are just so many facets and styles of music that one can express themselves with, and I never really felt like it served my art for me to be one dimensional as a musician. This all-acoustic album is a testament to that fact.

A mix of playful arrangements (“Here Comes the Fool,” “Big Trucker”), relatable ballads (“When I’m With You”), anthemic sing-alongs (“Prohibition Song”), and hopeful hymns including title track “Nothing’s In The Way,” the album is a perfect showcase of both Blake’s personal and musical journeys. And with cameo appearances from southern soul prodigy Marcus King, dobro legend Billy Cardine (Acoustic Syndicate, The Biscuit Burners, Lover’s Leap), Grammy-winning vocalist Debrissa McKinney (Empire Strikes Brass, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo), Americana gem Aaron “Woody” Wood, prolific producer and multi-instrumentalist Matt Williams, and multifaceted actress and singer Marisa Blake, the record serves as a reunion for the musical comrades who have circled Blake’s orbit through the years.

The project rides on the heels of an unreleased experimental album that Blake recorded with the late Colonel Bruce Hampton. When the legendary musician unexpectedly passed, Blake recovered some songs he had previously tucked away, and felt called to facilitate their reprise.

I had wrapped up a concept album - a “Gorillaz” style recording with electronic beats and live instruments -  that I had recorded with the late great Colonel Bruce Hampton as the narrator of the story. Very different sounding from this [new record], opposite side of the musical spectrum - a whole other dimension.  Awaiting permission for its release, I decided to dig up some songs of mine that hadn’t been recorded yet and lay them down in an all-acoustic format. I had done an all-acoustic show a couple years back, and really liked the vibe it gave to this material. I have [played] some of these songs in other formats in the past, but after that show I felt like the acoustic approach would give them new life. Even though it’s not what people are used to seeing and hearing from me, I believe it is what these songs needed, and hope that after listening everyone agrees.

“Nothing’s in the Way” is slated to drop on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, and will be available on all streaming platforms. Josh Blake and his acoustic band will be celebrating the record release in Asheville, NC at the Ambrose Westlistening room the following Thursday, May 16. Tickets are available at https://joshblakealbumnrelease.eventbrite.com.

‘HAYES & HOPSON’

ASHEVILLE HISTORY THEMED ALBUM TO BE RELEASED APRIL 27

Watch The Video For “Hayes & Hopson”
Here

Thursday, April 4, 2019 (Asheville, NC) - Head over to AVL Today this morning to watch the music video premiere of “Hayes & Hopson” from North Carolina swing jazz/folk outfit Queen Bee & The Honeylovers.

This toe-topping follow up to “Beacham’s Curve” - a tender ballad of forgiven love, and the band’s inaugural music video comes in anticipation of ASHEVILLE, the Honeylover’s history-themed debut album slated for an April 27 release. The band’s beloved city of the same name has served as the ultimate muse for the project. Funded in part by a grant from the Asheville Area Arts Council, the record seeks to tell the story of the mountain town's past by highlighting its most iconic figures and folklore in each track.

In “Hayes & Hopson,” party-goers enjoy dancing and debauchery in the legendary speakeasy that used to operate in downtown Asheville’s Pack Square.

Says “Queen Bee” Whitney Moore on her inspiration for writing the song:

According to local legend, the Hayes and Hopson building (currently Pack’s Tavern) in downtown Asheville was a central hub in an illicit moonshine smuggling ring. The mechanics dug a tunnel to the fire department across the square, where they would take the liquor for delivery on firetrucks. The presumption was that no one was going to search a fire truck! Since the police shared a building with Hayes and Hopson and even rented some of the Hayes and Hopson building space to use as overflow jail space, one can only assume that at least some of the officers were in on the take.

"Hayes & Hopson"

The forthcoming LP will include 14 tunes ranging from melody-centered waltzy instrumentals, to raucous anthems and will breathe new life into old-time swing music while still holding true to the soundscape of the 1920s. For a glimpse into what’s to come on its release day of April 27, “foxtrot” your way over to “Hayes & Hopson” for the perfect, moonshine-filled three minute getaway.

XPAND FEST ANNOUNCES LINEUP FOR THIRD ANNUAL EVENT, JUNE 8, 2019

NASHVILLE FUNK-FUSION OUTFIT DYNAMO TO HEADLINE, LOCALS THE GET RIGHT BAND, APRIL B & THE COOL, EMMA’S LOUNGE AMONG HIGHLIGHTS

April 2, 2019 (Asheville, NC) - With two years of knockout programming already under its belt, Xpand Fest returns to downtown Asheville’s South Slope neighborhood this June with what’s slated to be its most expansive and genre-diverse lineup yet.

The third annual street festival will welcome local heroes, “hip shaking, earth-quaking” (Relix) quartet The Get Right Band, the soulful, electrifying April B & The Cool, and Appalachian “space-wave” group Emma’s Lounge, to name a few.

"The Get Right Band couldn't be more excited about playing at Xpand Fest this year. We love to celebrate Asheville, we love to celebrate the arts, we love working toward important sustainability goals... it's like Xpand Fest was designed around the things we care about. This is really a festival that embraces and supports the local community. It's for the artists and the audience. We're all participants when we engage in the arts together. We're excited to connect with new fans and to become new fans of other bands and artists at the festival." - Members of the Get Right Band

In follow-up to last year’s efforts to introduce Xpand Fest as a force on the national frontlines, the free music & arts event will also be playing host to Nashville-based 10-piece funk ensemble Dynamo as headliners, who will top off the evening with their exhilarating live show. The group, whose label-mates include jazz-fusion icons Snarky Puppy, are no stranger to the Asheville soundscape, and are among the list of crowd-favorite touring names in Western North Carolina.

Now entering year three of operations, Xpand Fest executive director and founder of the Xpand brand Johanna Hagarty is keen in her vision to shine light on the Asheville arts and entrepreneurial community by activating creatives to be more hands-on in what matters to them. This is also a chance to encourage the community to feel that small financial contributions make a big difference for this free street festival and the economy as a whole. With over 95% of take-home funds from Xpand Fest going right back into the local ecosystem, a key goal for Xpand is to support the visionaries who make Asheville the arts destination that it has made itself out to be.

To further commit to the mission of integrating a sustainable focus inspired by the global goals identified by the United Nations (UN), Xpand is pleased to partner with an array of community organizations who align in value and community impact. One exciting partnership worth noting at this time is The Adé project. Adé is home for artistic liberation across the lines of race, class, ability, age, culture, gender, and sexuality in the South. Adé builds, sustains and connects a regional base of black, brown, and indigenous artists catalyzing social change through storytelling, creative facilitation, strategic campaigns, service projects, development + management, residencies, and performance developed in response to the current conditions in our communities.

With other stand-out programming including the return of the lantern parade and drop-in daycare for your children, this event has a little something for everyone.

WATCH HERE: Mountain Xpress Premieres “Beacham’s Curve”

This spring, dive back in time with Queen Bee & The Honeylovers and take a whimsical journey through the “Land of the Sky.” The newly-budded swing-jazz-folk ensemble is slated to drop their debut record, Asheville, on April 27, 2019. Asheville is a breath of fresh air in a cynical time - a joyful romp through the history of a famous mountain town: Thomas Wolfe’s Altamonte, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s playground. “Queen Bee” Whitney Moore pays homage to her hometown’s golden age through stories passed down from her grandparents, local legends, and folklore set to the musical style of their time. This fourteen-song set breathes new life and innovation into swing music while it gives a dedicated nod to the small-combo legends who first defined the genre.

Each track on the album is set in a different iconic Asheville location during the swing era. Some song titles are place names, like “Beacham’s Curve,” “Hominy Creek,” and “Helen’s Bridge” while others tell stories of famous Asheville personalities like “Cornelia’s Masquerade” (Cornelia Vanderbilt), “Dr. Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic” (E.W. Grove of the Grove Arcade and Grove Park Inn), and “The Legend of Zelda Fitzgerald.”

Rather than erase the injustices of yesteryear with a nostalgic gloss for simpler times, the Honeylovers paint a picture of the past that points out that  the “good ole days” were not good for everyone. Peel back the layers of Asheville, and you’ll find biting commentary that resonates with present-day politics. “Hayes and Hopson” is a raucous  party anthem about Asheville’s most famous speakeasy, but it also decries the ubiquity of police corruption. “Logan and Moore” is an homage to Whitney’s grandfather’s tailor shop, written using snippets of their ads. It also laments mechanized displacement of handicraft, echoing present day woes of Amazon and WalMart. “Beaucatcher” recounts the origin story of Asheville’s iconic mountain while sharing the tragic tale of a homosexual man trapped in a heterosexual relationship. In Asheville we learn that history has already repeated itself again and again.

This is not just another kitschy swing revival band. Smart and savvy, the Honeylovers’ sweet melodies invoke a nostalgia for simpler times, while their lyrics point to the politics of the current-day. And in celebrating Asheville’s history, they are proudly promoting the city that Asheville has become.

The album was recorded by Grammy winner, Matt Williams in his Weaverville, NC studio, The Eagle Room. Joining them in the studio was Henry Westmoreland of Squirrel Nut Zippers, Eric Heveron-Smith of Postmodern Jukebox, Russ Wilson and James Posedel of the Rhythm Serenaders. Three of the songs “Cornelia’s Masquerade”, “Hayes & Hopson” and “Beacham’s Curve” were co-written with Michael Gamble, founder of the Rhythm Serenaders and organizer of Lindy Focus.

Queen Bee and the Honeylovers will be celebrating the release of the album with a full band show at the Isis Theater in their hometown of Asheville (where else?) on Saturday, April 27.
